Hike toward you fears

Early last Sunday morning I faced one of my biggest fears 😱

I returned to the trail where I broke my ankle and leg in the early morning hours last November. That day my whole world was literally and figuratively turned upside down.

The following words are me being vulnerable and sharing my experience with a purpose to give others hope. ❤️🙏

We pulled up to the parking space along side the road and my eyes glanced briefly toward the trail head. On the inside a voice said with determination, “I’m really going to do this! I’m going to be scared, but I WILL do this and I will be ok.”

Stepping off the edge of the road onto the soil the first visual memory washes over me. “The last time I crossed over this small stream, I was only able to scoot on my hands, butt, and left foot.” I was cold, tired and in pain. This day my body is strong, warm and agile.

Next step across the small stream of water and then one more pause to look upward. The trail is steep! Wow, this is going to be quite a journey, and I may as well start now. As my body moved forward step by step, my mind moved forward to another phase in the emotional healing process from a traumatic injury.

Going up the trail or any trail for that matter, was fairly easy. My legs were strong, my steps were solid and my arms were supported by trekking poles. I had familiarity with landmarks in the trail and welcomed all of them. The muscles of my lower body began to feel the burn of exercise. About a quarter to half mile in, I started looking……I wanted to locate and acknowledge where I had fallen, but I couldn’t remember exactly where it was. Justin was just ahead of me and as he pointed out the exact spot, my conscious mind quickly flashed back.

In a matter of seconds I remembered the feeling of the cool fall air, the smell of the dampness in woods, the areas of firmness in the soil from the frost taking over and I remember the sound of my cry out when I fell to the ground. It all had happened so quickly that day.

It’s mind blowing how much you’re able to recall from only one second of your life. All of my senses were on alert!

There were waves of anxiety and there were many deep breathes taken. Every step I took was extremely mindful, and I caught my thoughts waxing and waning between positive and negative.

“Fear knocked at the door and Faith answered, and no one was there.” ~Ancient proverbial quote

Whenever a negative thought crossed my mind I would use my faith and think or say something positive and the fear would disappear. 🙏❤️

As I reached the lookout for this trail I had a strong sense of empowerment! I DID IT!! I hiked that trail up here!!! The view was rewarding and peacefulness was invaluable.

The next part of the trip going down was a whole lot more stressful and I am confident they were a few times a curse escaped my lips! 😂😂

I know whole heartedly that returning to this trail was part of the healing thathad to happen in order for me to emotional heal and let the anxiety go.

When all was said and done, I accomplished hiking that whole trail, and yet I accomplished so much more. I believe in order to grow positively facing challenges and facing your fears is crucial to our lives.

❓What are you going to do with your fears?

❓Run away from them OR run towards them??

See the Flowers instead of the Rain

When the morning comes and the weather may not be exactly as you want it to be,  how do you view your world? How do you set the emotional tone for your day?

As I drove to work a few mornings ago the sun was shining bright, the sky was blue, and they were fluffy clouds scattered across the sky floating around.  I had uplifting music playing on my radio and my mood was one of extreme happiness! 😃

Then…. all of the sudden, the sun was gone…..the sky was overcast…. and for a moment my mood plummeted.

How could the weather change so quickly?  Why did my mood shift so easily along with it?  What could I do to get that feeling back again?

Well, the weather and view changed simply because there was an area of fog that had settled in a specific place along my drive. It was as simple as that.  However, during those few minutes of cloudiness I reflected on my reaction and pondered how we as human beings are so easily influenced by our external world.  How can one moment of fogginess (weather or life experiences) have such a strong influence over our feelings or mood?

Life itself can be like that cloudiness that settled in so suddenly!  One moment everything can be beautiful and happiness overwhelms you, then something can happen in your life that causes a shift.  Your mood can change in a heartbeat, and it can set the tone from that moment on.  How can you take control of those reactions?

Mindfullness

What is Mindfullnes??

Merriam-Webster defines mindfulness as :

“the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis; also : such a state of awareness”

We all have the potential to harness how we react to our experiences.  We all have control over our perception of experiences, and we have control of our thoughts and emotions.  YOU and I can tap into and harness the power of our thoughts!

Jon Kabat-Zinn (1994) described mindfullness  “as paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally”

Have you ever purposely practiced mindfulness? Would you practice it more if you believed it could change you life completely?  Everything we experience on a day-to-day basis can present opportunities for practicing mindfulness.

I CHALLENGE and DARE you to set a goal of practing mindfulness on a daily basis for 1 week and assess at the end of those 7 days.  How did mindfullness change your life?

A few of my favorite teachers for teaching mindfulness

*Tara Brach – Buddhist Teacher that has many podcasts “I love her voice” I search under my phone apps. and have found a wealth of resources by her.

*Eckhart Tolle – Author of a book “A New Earth”. I read this book years ago when it first came out.  Eckhart first introduced me to the depth of our ego and had specific practices that teach mindfulness.

*Wayne Dyer : Amazing mentor!! I have listened to many of his books, read articles,  receive his newsletter and listen to the podcasts he has authored.  One specific book he wrote I’d recommend is   “Change Your Thoughts – Change Your Life”   He also filmed a movie titled “The Shift” SUCH  life altering lessons within this movie!! So good I purchased it. ❤

*Louise Hay – Founded the Hay House publishing company and website http://www.healyourlife.com   I can’t say enough about this woman! She was way ahead of her time in the 70’s.  Everything she has taught is finally being proven today with science!!!! OMG 😲 40 years later (my lifetime) and science is finally getting caught up to her thoughts and personal research.  I recommend you watch her movie  “You can Heal Your Life” I own two of these so I can share with others.

Louise also has the Hay House World Summit Coming up this weekend.  I’d highly recommened signing up to receive the emails.  You’ll have opportunities to listen to all the speakers each day.  www.hayhouseworldsummit.com

Life experiences are like the weather.  The sun can be shining down on you and everything is great in your life,  then at any given moment a cloud or even a full blown storm can move in and EVERYTHING  changes.

What matters most is what are you going to do when that cloud or storm moves in?, How are you going react? Can you take control of how you react by changing your thoughts?
